British Art Show 7 is in Plymouth between 17th September and 4th December 2011 at the end of its national tour of 4 cities: London (Hayward Gallery), Nottingham and Glasgow. The exhibition features work by 39 of the UKs most significant contemporary artists and has been secured for the city by Plymouth Visual Art Consortium in association with the Arts Council and Plymouth City Council. It is being housed across 5 venues: Plymouth Arts Centre, Plymouth Museum, Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth University and Royal William Yard.
Barefoot is working with PVAC and Plymouth Arts Centre to ensure that the education sector is fully aware of the exhibition and that young people, teachers, artists and Plymouth communities get maximum benefit from its time in the city. To this end the 5 main themes of the show (which include ‘Past and Present’ and ‘The Order of Things’) were the themes of Big Arts Festival 2011. We worked with schools, youth and community groups and artists to ensure that the Festival workshops and events ‘embedded’ BAS7 into everyone’s thinking, encouraging visits, related work and increased understanding of contemporary art.
We have also been working with PVAC to encourage artists who work on the Big Arts Festival to get involved in the BAS7 ‘Fringe’ activities and exhibitions – helping young people see the link between workshop leader and artist.
