The final Art of the Community event of 2010 took place at Plymouth University’s Levinsky Building and Drake’s Place Gardens. In the weeks leading up to the event four local schools had been working with different artists on a giant painted jigsaw piece and the day started on the Levinsky building terrace with a grand unveiling of the completed puzzle; each piece representing the children’s interpretation of their school and community painted in a distinctive style.

School performances then included the Haka and a ukulele band before relocating to Drake’s Place to be greeted by a host of different artists offering exciting activities. A favourite was the wood carving, where the children got to use tools to make a wooden sculpture. Other activities included dance, flag making, ceramics and printing.

The weather was so good that some of the groups even stayed behind for a picnic on the grass!

The children absolutely loved the art experience leading up to the event with the artist and really enjoyed the revealing of the jigsaw and were so enthusiastic with the art workshops around the park, they can’t wait to do it again!” , Sailsbury Road Primary School
