Friday July 8th 2011 - Hele's School, Plympton

Safe from the weather under Hele’s School’s vast Sports Dome, this event launched into its second year with over 200 participating children from host Hele’s and local primary schools Chaddlewood, Boringdon, Glen Park and Old Priory.

In the end threatening clouds were just that, allowing sports workshops to take place outside, whilst indoors children took part in workshop activities ranging from steel pan (drums) led by Hele’s students to circus skills and art activities. A major addition this year was the Gamelan provided by Plymouth Youth Music Service, an impressive ensemble of large, traditional red and gold framed gongs, xylophones, metallophones and drums that brought the sound of Bali to Plympton.

Other workshops included banner making and the Hele’s School-led ‘The Big Picture’ (where children each contributed a 20cm square to a massive picture of a local scene), with additional art and craft activities led by teachers. Again, the children worked in mixed groups and after the two workshops we welcomed over 60 parents to join us for dance and music performances from the schools. These included pirate and Viking songs and two numbers from Hele’s School’s production of West Side Story accompanied by full orchestra.

A true community event, even the police got in on the act with a stall run by local Community Support Officers, where anyone finishing an activity early could try finger printing and other crime detection techniques. No arrests were made!
