Friday 1st July 2011 - Keyham Green Places, Renown Street

For the third year running the sun shone on Keyham Art of the Community, the first event of 2011’s Big Arts Festival (BAF). Once again, Keyham Green Places Community Centre and Alexandra Park were the setting for a host of art, dance and sports activities led by expert practitioners and funded by the participating schools and Comic Relief. Prior to the event, a focus group of children worked with Barefoot, teachers and volunteers to plan the event, linking it to the themes of the British Art Show and local heritage.

In the morning, things kicked off at City College’s Goschen Centre, where children from Drake and Keyham Barton (RC) Primary Schools concluded a programme of five dance workshops led by City College students with a fantastic performance for parents and other children from their schools. They then paraded up the hill to Alexandra Park to meet their special guests - pupils from Stoke’s Stuart Road and Stoke Damerel Primary Schools - for a sunshine picnic on the grass.

After lunch the children were split into pre-arranged mixed school groups before getting hands-on with exciting activities that included kite making with Zoe Coles, story telling with Plymouth Centre for Faith and Cultural Diversity, circus skills with Stiltskin, Chinese brush painting with Xiao Bai Li and the Paralympic sport Boccia led by Plymouth Sports Academy. Every child had the chance to participate in two activities, with teachers and TAs joining in. After an afternoon of creative fun everyone gathered at the KGP amphitheatre to watch drama and dance performances from the schools, then donned costumes and joined local parents to parade around Alexandra Park to the sound of Djembe drumming and singing.
